They are not obsolete, au contraire, some of the new blu ray (or hd-dvd by the matter )player will make your dvds look even better than a regular dvd player.
blu-ray players will be made backward compatible to handle dvd and cd media … no worry
Backward compatibility
While it is not compulsory for manufacturers, the Blu-ray Disc Association recommends that Blu-ray Disc drives should be capable of reading standard DVDs for backward compatibility. For instance, Samsung’s first Blu-ray Disc drive can read CDs, regular DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs. All other Blu-ray Disc players that have been released so far are also capable of DVD playback, though not all support CD playback. This includes Sony, Panasonic, Philips, LG, Pioneer and PC-based players from Alienware, and Dell.
yes your old dvds will play on a blu ray player..and the player will upscale them…blu rays wont play on a normal dvd player tho…u need a blu ray player…i suggest getting a playstation 3…you can play games and movies…and its a 100 dollars less than a regular blu ray player…
