First of all, what you have there is commonly called a home theater in a box (HTIB). Phillips along with RCA are the cheapest in terms of quality. Look where it was made & you'll see why. They assemble these things from the cheapest parts supplier. I can assure you that real soon you'll be throwing it into the trash. So many people here have said that is what they will end up doing. You want Blu-ray, but the only way to take advantage of it is to run the HDMI cable straight from it to a TV with a 1080p resolution. The only way to hear the Dolby HD & DTS-MA surround is to use a receiver that has that capability. Your HTIB does not.

So this is what you need to do in order to take advantage of Blu-ray.
1. throw your HTIB in the trash or return it if you can.
2. Get a decent receiver like a Yamaha RX-V665
3. Get a set of real speakers like this one:
4. Enjoy quality.
5. Stop being so cheap.
